Remember watching fireflies light up your yard on hot summer nights? Fireflies are beautiful and mysterious, and for many of us, catching and spotting them is an important part of summer.

Like tiny shooting stars, these little winged acrobats flicker and dance across the yard at night. It was fun to chase those flashes around the yard and see how many we could catch. The neighborhood kids would take a mayonnaise or jelly jar, punch holes in the lid with an ice-pick and throw in a few sprigs of fresh grass; for them to eat of course! The same jars were used day after day, week after week - catching fireflies or lightning bugs (what we called them), in the evenings. What fun to catch the flying luminaries and then let them go all at once after the count and the winner was declared each night.

Fireflies are actually beetles. In this book you will learn how they get their signature glow, what their flashing patterns mean and where they live.

Flashing Fireflies Amazing Facts About Insects Book 3 A B Mac

I loved the book. I love nature and nature facts and there were plenty to be found in this book. I, too, have written some books recently that had amazing facts about nature and it's inhabitants and it is funny how so many about the fireflies correlate to some of my own in my book.

Fireflies use their light as a defense mechanism against predators, South American frogs are very colorful to warn predators that they contain venom they can use against the predator. The more colorful, the more venomous.

Some fireflies never eat or only at certain times. Alligators do the same.

Femme fatale fireflies - I think we've all heard of the black widow spider.

The synchronized pulses of light I haven't heard of but would love to see; that has to be amazing. The picture of a whole group of fireflies as well as all the pictures in the book were great.

As with the books I have written recently, I had fun and enjoyed them because of all the amazing facts I learned and the same can be said for this Firefly book!

Flashing Fireflies Amazing Facts About Insects Book 3 A B Mac Reviews

Not anymore. A B Mac is a prolific author and never disappoints her readers. I saw fireflies for the first time in the Northwest when I was camping and always wondered how they produced the light. This book is loaded with pertinent facts and I enjoyed learning about something that has intrigued me for years. This is a very good book from a very good author.
Wow - this is one fascinating little book! Most of us can relate to memories of chasing fireflies - or lightning bugs, as we used to call them - but who knew all of these marvelous facts about them? The author weaves an amazing story about how these little bugs were transformational in business restructuring - which proves that the power of observation can be profoundly powerful in life. Amazing pictures as well.
This is another great, educational book by A B Mac! The author shares great information and photos about fireflies and how they light up. I never realized there were so many different types of fireflies! Great fun read to share with your family, especially if you have the opportunity to see some fireflies out on a clear summer night. Good information, great photos of fireflies.
My children love to learn about different animals, fish, birds, etc. Most of the learning we do together is with books and they must have at least a few pictures in them. They have learnt a lot about most creatures with what I have shared with them this way.

Being in a country that doesn't have fireflies I thought this would be a great learning book for them, I must say I has not disappointed! It is packed with lots of pictures and interesting facts about the Firefly that really intrigued them. This book has delivered a wonderful understanding about these fascinating insects.
Fireflies are amazing. As I child, I was enchanted on dark summer nights in the country where the "lightning bugs" competed with the canopy of stars as they flew within catching reach. We kids would fill a jar to make a lightning bug lantern. Ah the romance of childhood...only to find these little, unexciting beetles in the jar in the morning. Guilty, we would release them back into nature. A B Mac brought back that adventure in this little wonderful book of firefly facts and amazing photos. Well done as all of this author's nature books are. Highly recommended to learn, to reminisce.
When I was a kid we had lots of fireflies. I remember catching them in a jar and watching them blink. But I never saw the detail that's in these amazing photographs. They are spectacular!

I think I'd always been told they blinked to find each other, but this book makes it clear the complexity and communication system of their little lights is far more than just 'seeing' each other. I had no idea there were so many different fireflies and so many different light patterns. It was great to learn so much about them.

The author's own story of how fireflies inspired her to rethink her design process, and her suggestion to look at your own life for ways to use the firefly ideas she had suggested got me to thinking about my own life.

I was actually quite surprised that right away I spotted a useful way of looking at a situation I'd been wrestling with, and making my peace with it.

Great little read!
It was Indpendence Day, 1980, down by Silver Dollar City in Missouri. I had taken my family from Tulsa, OK to explore the Ozarks. We pitched a tent at a KOA campground and the day was quickly transitioning from dusk to dark. Some of the kids at the campground were lighting sparklers and those colorful fireworks cones. Suddenly, the whole forest started to glow. At first I thought...and I think I even said out loud, "How many kids and sparklers are there out there, anyway?" My wife and kids about the same time blurted out, "What are those?" Suddenly it dawned on me...in the pitch of black...those are fireflies! Wow! We were from Idaho. We had just recently transferred to my new promotion in Tulsa. None of us had ever seen real, living, breathing fireflies before. We were all totally mesmerized and awestruck. You know how to bring back those memories...to a complete stranger. Thank you. I like your cover, it is very captivating. I especially like luminescent and phosphorescent light and colors.
